Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs)
Solar Renewable Energy Credits or SRECs for short, are the representation of the "green" value of the energy produced by your solar system. Think of them as a voucher that proves that the electricity produced by your solar system comes from renewable solar energy. You earn one SREC for every 1,000 kWh of energy produced by a solar system. These hold value because many utility companies must buy a certain number of them each year to meet sustainability requirements set by the renewable portfolio standard in each state.
SRECs for Illinois homeowners are administered through the Illinois Shines program. However, there is a limit to how many credits are available through the program. As more people join this program, the value of each SREC will decrease. You can view the Illinois Shines Block Pricing plan here.
The value of each SREC will decrease over time, register today with Acorn to get the best value for the energy your solar system produces!
